From Struggles to Success - Paul Marciano’s Story
Paul Marciano was actually born in 1952 in Debdou in Morocco and born in a Jewish family. He was also raised in Marseilles France with his siblings who are Maurice, Georges, Armand and Jacqueline. Learn more about art foundation, view here.
Paul likewise came from from a family of rabbis. His father was actually a rabbi and was born in Marseilles in the year 1954 to 1986. Paul and his siblings grew up in an apartment that’s located in a synagogue complex. All of them were Jewish Boy Scouts and were also under the synagogue. When reached 15 years old, Paul and his friend had been involved in a motorcycle accident where they were crushed by a vehicle. After being told that he could never walk again, he actually spent 7 months in a wheelchair but later on regained the full use of his limbs after a year and a half. However, he was not accepted again in school due to his long absence. The fact that he was not able to finish school, he decided to travel to Israel and then lived in a kibbutz.
It was during in this time to where Paul had his first success. It led to the opening of their company which was named MGA - Marciano, Georges, Armand. They opened their first store during this year in Bandol at a side street and in an old fish store. They first started with blouses and started manufacturing dresses like what they did with blouses that are available in one size but comes in various prints and fabrics. Also, they made pants and jeans and started selling stonewashed jeans back in 1976 and already have 20 stores during that time.
This was the time to when Guess was started by Georges and Maurice. Paul and Armand at that time were managing retail operations of MGA that had 4 stores already in the U.S. After several months, they later on joined Guess. Guess’s name was the idea of Georges. This was the time to when the brothers were driving to work together and they saw a huge billboard along the way that says “GUESS what's in the new big mac?”. The big word that it has was later on turned to the brand name and it was Mauricio who came up on the idea of the question mark.
During this year, Paul and Armand joined the brothers. It was also during this time to when Paul decided to advertise for the company. They started out with a low budget and later on asked for the help from their friends. Just after a year, their sales skyrocketed to 6 million dollars.
In this year, Paul became the president and chief operating officer of Guess. Later in 2015, Paul Marciano then stepped down as the CEO and became the Execute Chairman and remained in Guess as a chief creative officer.
